The Cancer and Careers programme was created by the Cosmetic Executive Women Foundation in the USA in 2001. Cosmetic Executive Women, CEW for short, is the leading organisation for women who work in the beauty industry at executive level. Founded in the USA in 1954 it now also operates in France and the UK.
Cancer and Careers was a simple idea, conceived in response to learning that five members of the CEW US Board had been diagnosed with cancer. Despite readily available medical information, they found it difficult to find practical advice on balancing work demands and a treatment schedule. To this end CEW Inc. set about producing the first “Living and Working with Cancer” handbook which was the initial step towards providing a vital information resource for women seeking to continue working during and after cancer treatment. In 2004 the CEW (UK) organisation introduced their first UK edition of “Living and Working with Cancer” - to date 30,000 copies of the handbook have been given free of charge via cancer centers, support groups and at cancer events and conferences. Requests for the book come from all over the UK. This third edition incorporates guidance, but, with many more links to local services, support groups, health and cancer information services, beauty and skincare products, wigs, wig cutting services, reconstructive plastic surgery clinics and hospitals, post and pre-operative fashion, lingerie and UK wide fitting services and much more. It is also supported by this new and updated Cancer and Careers website. It is our hope that the expanded handbook and website will become a premier resource and will provide ideas, information and inspiration for all cancer survivors, their families and their colleagues at work. CEW (UK) with the support of the beauty industry is working to make this a reality. |
